Bartlett Fence: Our Story
About US
Rick Bowers, my dad, was an old Florida cowboy. Cowboys and fence go together. Cowboys only know one way and that’s the right way. He had no can’t nor quit in him. He entered the fence industry at a very early age as an invitation to a job by Jimmy Wyatt during a church service at Floyd Church of Christ in Millington, TN.
He worked his way from a laborer to an Installer to Foreman and eventually to Vice President of Commercial at Memphis Fence Company before venturing out on his own to start Bartlett Fence in 1995. His adoration for his family and horses always pointed the direction of his heart. My dad loved this industry and had the privilege of working with as well as even training some of the Memphis market leading fence men and women.
About US
My mom, Debra Tillman, loved my dad dearly and when he started Bartlett Fence, worked next to him daily stretching fabric and nailing boards. The two of them built a company on quality and the personal relationship they built with each customer.
When they weren’t standing up a fence, they were spending time with family and working on numerous ongoing projects around their mini farm. They never lived the phrase – take a breather. Rick and Debra had four children between them and thirteen grandchildren. Unfortunately, Rick did not make it to meet his great grandchildren.
However the family, without doubt, believe they would have stopped time for him. Every once in a while we talk about what if PePa was here to see them and we all get a comforting laugh. After his passing in 2018, it took us all time to move forward in our own ways.
My dad was a strong man with strong faith and a huge belief in the right way that left an everlasting hold on all our hearts. Mom and him always tried to get me to go into the industry and I never would, not until about 10 years ago and I fell in love with it. Mom often says well you know what Rick would have done… he’d done it this way or that way.
About US
Rick never got involved in the politics of the fence industry. He would, however, take a young person under his wing if they were willing and coach them in any craft that he knew that they wanted to learn.
Phillip Doyle remembers when he started in the fence industry working on Rick’s truck and learning from him. He says I finally became a Foreman one day when we came in from the field at the end of the day and the Superintendent wanted both of us in his office. Phillip said the Superintendent told them they never, ever receive a complaint from a customer on their work or customer service, but man the customers get tired of the two of you bickering… Phillip laughs.
What do we have to do to fix that? Phillip told the Superintendent put me on my own truck with my own crew. The Superintendent said DONE! Hilarious, but that’s how it was with my dad. He did things, fencing, welding, gardening, whatever it was… his way because it was the correct way. He built projects on precise quality that was made to last and once he had taught you all he could, it was time for you to go and do the same with others.
how we started
When I split ways from my previous partner in the fence industry, I had no plans to do what I am doing now. I wanted to stay in the industry I had grown to love, however I thought I would go to work for one of the industry vendors or something of that nature. When the idea to start Bartlett Fence back up came from my wife, Ashley Yarbrough, I thought sweet but at the time I didn’t read much into it.
Little did she know the seed she had planted at that moment. Then a few weeks later my oldest son said something to me that started to cultivate that seed and I returned to Ashley to say what do you think. She said to me, on our front porch that afternoon, babe, if this is what you want to do I will have your back and we will do it. We asked mom for her blessing and she teared up saying yes.
The next week we started the paperwork to reopen the company. Daily I feel him with me in all that I do. Since opening the company back up there are many times I think what I am doing and through someone or something he pushes me forward. He reminds me we are where we are supposed to be.
I remember one day on a job I was on with him and my mom. I was mixing concrete and asked to use the concrete mixer on the trailer. He said that’s my concrete mixer and that wheel barrow is yours. But that was who he was… learning it and it sticking in.
That is the same beliefs I carry today. The character of doing things the right way and leaving a job better than you found it is the way we perform today. Making it personal with a customer because they put the food on your table and recommend you to their family and peers is the focal point of Bartlett Fence today. It is the way he did it and it will always be the way we do it. ALWAYS!!!
About US
Rick was not my biological father, but he was the man that filled the shoes. That is just who he was and he fulfilled God’s purpose in my life. To me, he was always dad. So Daddy Rick, this one is for you. This is the legacy you left for us all and we will ALWAYS carry it forward. Just like cowboys, with no quit nor can’t in our language. It is the legacy that you left and we will always tribute it to you with a passion to grow and be better. We thank you! We love you! We will never forget you! The cowboy way!!!
